Cring's big night lifts Redskins to victory

Nicole Cring’s triple-double led Cooperstown’s girls to a 40-26 basketball victory over the host school in the consolation game of the Vernon-Vernona-Sherrill Tournament on Wednesday.

Cring finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

The Redskins jumped to a 15-8 lead afterone quarter. Liz Millea scored half of her game-high 12 points in the opening eight minutes. Millea also had seven assists.

Sumer Murdock scored the first five points of the second half as Cooperstown extended its lead to 25-15.

The Redskins (11-2) will travel to Waterville on Saturday.


Delhi 42, Davenport 36

Brandon Simonds and Ben Denison combined for all nine of Delhi’s points in overtime and the visiting Bulldogs won a non-league game.

“We had some turnovers and made some mistakes,” Davenport coach Lee Fisher said of the extra period.

Simonds scored five of his nine points and Denison had four of his game-high 15 points in the extra session. Both players also hit three-pointers in overtime as Delhi outscored Davenport, 9-3.

The Wildcats forced overtime when Corey Hartman hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 33.

Matthew Finne had eight points to lead Davenport (5-9), which will travel to South Kortright on Friday.

Unatego 64, Greene 49

Kellen Komenda and Tanner Winchester scored 14 points apiece to lead Unatego (8-4, 7-1) to a road win in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

All four of the Spartans’ three-point field goals came in the first quarter, which ended with Unatego up, 25-13. Komenda hit two threes, and Winchester and Phil Youngs each made one from behind the arc.

Tyler Butler contributed 10 points and Youngs had nine. Quinn Barnhart finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Spartans travel to Hancock on Friday.

Greene (9-3, 6-2) was paced by Dan Treadwell’s 21 points. The Trojans will host Unadilla Valley on Friday.

Chenango Forks 62, Walton 53

Seventeen points from Eric Zimmerman couldn’t keep Walton from dropping a non-league win on the road.

Zimmerman made three of Walton’s seven three-pointers. Wyatt Finn hit two threes en route to eight points. Finn also had seven rebounds.

Dalton Kaminsky contributed nine points, six rebounds, five assists, and five blocks for Walton (3-10), which will host Harpursville on Friday.

Andrew Ziegenfus had 20 points to lead the Blue Devils.


Whitney Point 38, Unatego 38

Though the teams scored the same number of points, visiting Whitney Point earned the non-league victory by winning more matches. The Golden Eagles won eight of the 15 matches.

Leland Slawson had Unatego’s lone pin. He needed 22 seconds to stop Nick Knight at 160. Ryan Marszal contributed an 18-4 win over James Knight at 192 for Unatego, which will compete in the Midstate Athletic Conference Championships at 10 a.m. Saturday at Unadilla Valley.
