Sumer Murdock scored a game-high 20 points, including five three-pointers, to lead top-seeded Cooperstown to a 47-34 victory over Herkimer in a Section Three Class C-1 girls basketball semifinal Wednesday at Onondaga Community College.

Nicole Cring contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for the Redskins (18-2).

“We were able to get the ball to Nicole in the post and she did a nice job getting to the foul line tonight,” Redskins coach Mike Niles said of Cring’s 10-for-16 performance from the foul line.

“Nicole and Sumer had big games for us tonight,” he continued. “Sumer was able to hit some big threes to help us maintain a comfortable lead.”

Hanna Delude scored a team-high 14 points for Herkimer.

Cooperstown will play Thousand Islands or Little Falls in the Section Three Class C-1 Championship game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday back at OCC.

Schenevus 39, Hancock 33

Sarah Mellor scored a game-high 14 points to lead eighth-seeded Schenevus to a Section Four Class D first-round victory.

Mellor had a key basket in transition with under two minutes left in the fourth quarter that gave the Dragons a two-possession lead. Thereafter, Taylor Spranger and Karly Cairo went 5-for-6 from the line to seal it for Schenevus.

“Both teams had off nights,” Schenevus coach Tim Walke said. “It wasn’t a pretty game.”

Ceara Marlow had eight points and Cairo finished with seven for Schenevus.

Ninth-seeded Hancock (8-11) received 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists from Lea Neumann.

At 6 p.m. Friday, Schenevus (12-5) will play at top-seeded Franklin in a rematch of the Tri-Valley League championship game that the Purple Devils won, 56-48, Saturday at Oneonta State.

“We have to rebound better and we have to have a little bit better shooting percentage than the last time we played,” Walke said of Friday’s quarterfinal. “They’re a good ballclub, so we have to rebound. We can’t give them three to four chances when they do miss.”
