Red Dragons track coach tops region

Oneonta State’s Matt LoPiccolo is on a roll.

LoPiccolo earned his second Coach of the Year award for indoor track this season as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association honored him as the top NCAA Division III coach in the Atlantic Region.

LoPiccolo received the same award from the SUNY Athletic Conference after he led O-State’s men to their first indoor conference title in program history. The Red Dragons won six individual conference crowns and one relay championship en route to a meet-best 153 points at the SUNYACs.

LoPiccolo now has three regional coaching accolades. His first two came for the women’s teams after the 2005 outdoor and 2006 indoor seasons, respectively.

Over 13 seasons as O-State’s cross country and track coach, LoPiccolo has produced 36 All-Americans, which includes three national champions.


Wick players honored

Three members of the Hartwick women’s water polo team were recognized with weekly awards from the CWPA.

Sophomore Kamila Zakirova earned Western Division Player of the Week, junior Jemma Dendy Young won Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Britt Tait made the weekly honor roll.

Zakirova had seven goals, seven assists, six steals and three drawn kick-outs as Hartwick went 3-0 last Saturday at the Marist Tournament. She scored four times and contributed two assists and three steals in the Hawks’ 16-8 win over Iona. Against Wagner, she finished with two goals, three assists, two steals and one drawn kick-out in Hartwick’s 16-10 victory.

Dendy Young finished with four goals, four assists and 11 steals in three games. She assisted on a goal and had five steals in Hartwick’s 15-5 win over Notre Dame College. She followed with two goals, two assists and five steals in the Hawks’ win over Iona.

Tait amassed five goals, six assists, two steals and two drawn kick-outs in the tournament. She had three goals and one steal in the Notre Dame win. She also had a pair of goals and one assist in the Iona victory, as well as five assists, one steal and two drawn kick-outs against Wagner.
