Reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year Jared Suderley scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the first half, leading visiting Hartwick College to a 70-39 non-conference men’s basketball thumping of city rival Oneonta State at Dewar Arena.
Kyle Bradley finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Hawks (3-2), who held a 36-17 halftime lead. Hartwick also received 12 points from Christian Laputka on 4-for-4 shooting from three-point range, where the Hawks went 9-for-18.
Hartwick, which has reached the NCAA Division III Tournament the last two seasons, shot 26-for-28 from the floor and 9-for-15 from the foul line.
Zach Mager’s 10 points paced the Red Dragons (1-2), who received six from 2011-12 SUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year Frankie Kelly.
Laurens graduate Aaron Laing started and contributed three blocks, two points and two assists for the Hawks, who host Morrisville State on Saturday.
Cooperstown graduate Jeremiah Ford had one steal in three minutes off the bench for Oneonta, which visits Buffalo State on Friday.
Wednesday’s game drew 712 fans.
Hartwick 48, O-State 38
Juniors Maria Foglia and Kate Purcell scored 13 points apiece as Hartwick won a battle between 2011-12 NCAA Division III Tournament qualifiers at Oneonta State’s Dewar Arena.
Foglia grabbed seven rebounds and Purcell contributed six rebounds and three three-pointers for the Hawks (4-1), who received eight rebounds apiece from
fellow starters Tracey Koch and Katrina Caulfield.
Hartwick finished 18-for-27 from the free throw line, where O-State made 6 of 12 attempts. Wednesday’s game drew 307 spectators.
Lyteshia Price’s 11 points paced Oneonta (2-3), which jumped to a 9-2 lead en route to a 21-20 advantage at halftime.
Grace Shilling and Kristen Pappalardo scored nine points each for the Red Dragons, who got eight rebounds from Sarah Longto.
O-State begins its SUNYAC schedule on Friday at Buffalo State. The game is a rematch of last year’s conference tournament final, which Oneonta won, 50-41.
Hartwick hosts Morrisville State on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
