Late rallies lift Oneonta State to baseball sweep

Staff Report

The Oneonta State baseball team saved its best for last Thursday — twice.

The Red Dragons scored four times in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 4-2 victory over host Old Westbury, then completed a non-conference doubleheader sweep with three runs in the ninth for a 6-3 victory in extra innings.

Old Westbury (7-11) took a 2-0 lead and a no-hitter by Frank DiMaria into the seventh inning of the opener. Chris Orlando ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single to left and Chris Massaroni followed with a double to left-center to put runners at second and third.

Jake Robinson then hit an RBI single that put runners at the corners. Rob Peluso’s sacrifice fly tied it at 2, and Mike Schoonmaker later hit a two-run double for the final margin.

Benji Parks allowed two runs on two hits and struck out four in six innings for his first pitching victory for the Red Dragons (5-11). Reliever Jim Hegmann followed with a scoreless seventh for his third save of the season.

O-State fell into a 1-0 hole in the second game before scoring twice in the fourth. Ivan Plata scored on a wild pitch to tie it before Matt Mastroianni singled in the go-ahead run.

Dean Haussel made it 3-1 when he scored on a fielding error by Old Westbury shortstop Eddie Hernandez in the fifth. The Panthers pulled to 3-2 in the bottom frame on a sacrifice fly by Robert Crocitto, then tied in in the sixth with an unearned run.

The score remained tied until the ninth, which started with a single by Robinson. He stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double by Peluso. Thomas Hand and Haussel followed with RBI singles to put O-State ahead, 6-3.
