O-State softball splits on road

Staff Report

Oneonta State rode a five-run second inning to a split Friday, earning a 6-4 softball victory in the second game of a SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader at Fredonia.

The triumph followed a 2-1 loss to the Blue Devils in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

In the second game, Nicole Marzillo and Tricia Kendziera hit back-to-back RBI singles before Fredonia (4-8, 1-1) allowed three unearned runs on two errors. Laura Campbell’s RBI single in the third gave the Red Dragons (3-7, 1-1) a 6-0 lead.

Winning pitcher Rachel Hitt (1-4) struck out seven, walked six and scattered seven hits in a complete-game victory, despite three Oneonta errors that resulted in four unearned runs for the Blue Devils.

Kendziera, Marzillo, Campbell and Traci Lichtenstein finished the second game with two hits apiece for O-State, which finished with an 11-6 advantage in hits.

Sophomore pitcher Katie O’Flynn went the distance in the opener but fell to 2-3 this season after giving up two unearned runs on a single by Jess Lauck in the bottom of the sixth. O’Flynn struck out seven, walked none and gave up four hits.

O’Flynn also went 3-for-3 with an RBI double in the fourth inning for the Red Dragons, who play a SUNYAC doubleheader at noon Saturday at Buffalo State.

Cobleskill swept

SUNY Cobleskill was no-hit in an 11-0 loss in the first game and dropped the second, 3-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Sage College.

Katie Kovage struck out five and allowed one runner - on a throwing error - to lead Sage in the first game. Hillary Faas hit a three-run homer during a 10-run fourth inning for the Gators (5-9). Faas finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the second game, Faas hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Cobleskill (2-6) pulled to 2-1 when sophomore Julia Lull homered in the third inning. Brianne Gray took the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits. She struck out three.
