Sidney junior throws no-hitter

Junior Jon Gorshack, making his first varsity start, threw a five-inning no-hitter to lead host Sidney to a 22-0 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over Hancock on Tuesday.

Gorshack struck out six and walked one, allowing two base-runners _ the second on a throwing error in the fourth inning.

“This is the first time I've seen Jon pitch on the mound and he was throwing harder than I've seen before,” first-year Sidney coach Matt Ferraro said. “His curveball was working too, but his fastball is what gave him success.”

Noah McKee had three doubles and two RBIs, and Billy Kozak had two hits, two RBIs and three runs for Sidney (3-0, 1-0), which will travel to Walton today.

Nate Shackelton's three-run triple to center gave host Unadilla Valley a 12-11 lead during a seven-run sixth inning and the Storm held on for a Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

Shackelton scored UV's 13th run on a single by Brandon Kuhn, who, like Shackelton, went 2-for-5.

The Storm (1-2, 1-0) will travel to Deposit on Thursday.

Trevor Zandt had three hits, and Dalton Kaminsky and Abel Clark had two hits apiece for Walton.

Freshman Josh Feyerabend struck out eight and walked three in a three-hitter to earn his first varsity victory as visiting Unatego opened its Midstate Athletic Conference schedule with a victory.

“He's inexperienced playing at this level, but he threw a good game,” Unatego coach Frank Microni said of Feyerabend, who also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Spartans (3-1, 1-0) took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. Tanner Winchester singled and stole second, and scored on Kellen Komenda's single. Komenda went 2-for-4.

Unatego will host Bainbridge-Guilford on Thursday.

Matt Anderson struck out 14 in a four-hitter and Erik Ehrhart hit an RBI triple in the first inning to lead host Stamford to a non-league victory.

Anderson stuck with mostly fastballs and needed 87 pitches to complete the game.

Geoff Mattice hit an RBI single in the first inning to make it 2-0 and Dustin King highlighted the Indians' three-run sixth inning with a two-run double.

Christian Cooper and Mike Smith had two hits apiece for Gilboa, which received 10 strikeouts from Hunter Grace in a five-hitter.

Stamford (1-1) will host Hunter-Tannersville on Friday.

Winning pitcher Ben Smith struck out six and allowed three runs over five innings.

Justin Monahan had two hits for Cherry Valley-Springfield (0-1, 0-1), which will travel to Schenevus on Thursday.

Dakota Caronia's two-run double helped host Roxbury to eight runs in the fifth inning and the Rockets went on to a non-league victory.

Roxbury (2-0) trailed, 10-8, entering the fifth inning.

Spencer Hinkley tripled and scored three runs for the Rockets, who will travel to Margaretville today for a non-leaguer.

Tanner Slutzkey went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for Hunter-Tannersville.

Lucas Butcher's sacrifice fly to center in the seventh inning scored Jacob Mazzarella with the go-ahead run as Bainbridge-Guilford won on the road in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

Mazzeralla led off the inning with a single and moved up to third on a throwing error.

“My hats off to both pitchers – they threw strikes all night, and defensively both teams were very solid,” B-G coach Tim Mattingly said.

Austin Bauerle (2-0) struck out three in a seven-hitter.

Corbin Palmer and Mazzeralla both had two hits, including a double, to pace the Bobcats.

Mason Dean led Harpursville with two hits

Brad Dreher struck out 10 in a three-hitter to lead visiting Davenport in the Delaware League.

Teammate Colyn Bonadies had two hits, including a double and one RBI.

“Dreher pitched very well for them tonight. We had some trouble catching up to his fastball,” Davenport coach Jim Wolfe said. “I am very proud of the way we played tonight. Josh pitched very well and we play good defensively.”

Davies had 10 strikeouts in four innings for the Wildcats (0-3).

Davenport plays at Gilboa on Friday.
