Three locals have shot at state wrestling titles

Staff Report

Unatego teammates Kevin Thayer and Ryan Marszal will join Mark Viviano of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton in the semifinal round of the Division II State Wrestling Tournament after the three area boys went 2-0 on the first day of the event at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Thayer followed a 13-2 major decision over Smithtown Christian senior Matt Migliore with a 7-2 quarterfinal decision over Petrides senior Tyson Simon at 152 pounds. Unatego senior Thayer will face Addison junior Trey Duvall in the semifinals, which start at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Duvall downed Section Four champion Kyle Halladay of Chenango Valley, 6-5, in the quarterfinals. Halladay beat Thayer, 9-7, for the Section Four D-II title Feb. 9 at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton. After losing to Halladay, Thayer earned an at-large berth for the state tournament.

The other 152-pound semi pits Phoenix junior Rowdy Prior against Eden junior Alex Smythe. Semifinal winners will meet in the championship round, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Unatego sophomore Marszal advanced to the semifinals at 182 with back-to-back victories that required multiple overtime periods. Section Four champion Marszal started with a 6-5 decision in triple-overtime against Edgemont junior Chris Kim, then followed with a 3-2 double-overtime defeat of Hoosick Falls senior Brad Burns.

Marszal advanced to a semifinal against Warsaw senior Tim Schaefer. Canastota senior Zack Zupan will face Beekmantown senior Gage Bourdeau in the other semifinal. Bourdeau advanced with a 10-2 major decision over Walton senior Mike Beers in the quarterfinals. Beers earned an at-large berth after falling, 7-2, to Marszal in the Section Four championship match.

Viviano will take part in an all-senior semifinal round at 195. He’ll face Bryce Mazurowski of Avon on Saturday, when Tyler Smith of Midlakes meets Gouverneur’s Hunter Ayen.

Section Four champion Viviano opened with a pin of Duanesburg senior Jeff Senecal in 4 minutes, 59 seconds. He followed with an 8-3 decision over Midlakes senior Lane Frost.
