CV-S 4, SK 0
Kurt Pressly scored twice and second-seeded Cherry Valley-Springfield limited visiting South Kortright to three shots in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal victory.
Pressly opened the scoring 6:10 before halftime. Hunter Cox started the scoring sequence on CV-S’ side of midfield. Cox sent a long ball to Noah Russo on the left side. Russo then sent a crossing pass to the right side of the box. Pressly cut in front of SK goalie Brett Post and bodied the ball into the goal.
“We had some opportunities we didn’t capitalize on (in the first half),” CV-S coach Terri Adams said. “The wind was against us. We had those chances we didn’t finish on and then late in the first half we got one. At halftime, we talked about some things, worked our short passing game, pressure the ball and got three goals.”
Ben Drugatz made it 2-0 with 33:26 left. He scored on a rebound after an initial shot was bobbed by the goalie.
Pressly scored 10 minutes later and Russo capped the scoring.
“We kept it to the feet and our defense was solid,” Adams said of her 16-1 Tri-Valley League title-winning squad. “We moved as a unit, supported every unit and it was a total team effort.”
The Patriots’ lone loss this season came against a Davenport squad it will play Wednesday in a sectional semifinal at the Wright National Soccer Campus.
“I thought we had opportunities we didn’t finish on,” Adams said of the 1-0 loss to the Wildcats on Sept. 23. “I thought both teams played hard. I think it will be a good matchup.”
Margaretville 6, Morris 2
Kyle Short scored three goals and had an assist to lead top-seeded Margaretville to a Section Four Class D quarterfinal victory at home.
Twelve minutes into play, Roberto Sarabia received a cross from Sam Gil, and then beat a Morris defender, setting up a 1-on-1 with Morris’ Aiden Staib. Sarabia shot to the near post from 14 yards to make it 1-0.
