Hartwick men earn MAC tie on road

O-State 3, Fredonia 1

The visiting Red Dragons completed a 7-0-2 run through SUNY Athletic Conference competition Saturday.

O-State (11-3-4) opened the scoring in the fifth when sophomore Alex Winiarski scored his third goal of the season. Dylan Williams assisted on the goal.

Fredonia tied teh score a minute later. Jakob Persons beat O-State goalie Daniel DeBottis on a breakaway.

O-State took the lead for keeps in the 55th minute. Freshman Zachary Southworth knocked in a corner kick from Winiarski to make it 2-1. Freshman Hans Purtell made it 3-1 in the 80th minute off an assist from Luke Halberg.

O-State outshot Fredonia, 13-7, and had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Red Dragons are the top seed for the SUNYAC tournament, which begins Saturday with first-round games. O-State will host a semifinal Nov. 6 against Plattsburgh or Buffalo State.

Cayuga 2, Delhi 1

Joffre Portilla opened the scoring 4:37 into Saturday’s NJCAA Region III Tournament opener, but host SUNY Delhi ended its season with a loss.

Portilla scored to the right post following a corner kick by Jimmy Mitias to give Delhi (7-7), which was seeded third in the East, the early lead.

Cayuga, which is the West’s sixth seed, answered with a 40-yard goal off a direct kick 34:37 into the match. Cayuga then scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute on a breakaway.

Tautis Poniskatis made three saves as the winning goalie.

Brandon Rivera stopped two shots for Delhi, which went 6-5 against Region III opponents this season.

LBC 3, Cobleskill 0

Tucker Lewis stopped a penalty kick and finished with 14 saves Sunday, but SUNY Cobleskill ended its season with a North Eastern Athletic Conference loss at Lancaster Bible College.

The Fighting Tigers (1-15, 0-8) were outshot, 34-1, by LBC (6-9-3, 3-4-1), which scored all of its goals in the second half.
