Patriots reach Class D final

ONEONTA – They may be the worst two words in soccer: own goal.

South Kortright was the victim 1 minute, 30 seconds into the second half of a Section Four Class D girls semifinal at the Wright National Soccer Campus as the Rams fell to Cherry Valley-Springfield, 2-0.

“That first goal was unfortunate,” SK coach Josh Burroughs said. “Coming off one of our own players and pretty quick into the half. I think that took the momentum away from us and gave it to them.”

Jordan Loucks played a cross from the right side toward Lauren Loucks, but the ball hit an SK defender and went into the goal.

With 14:15 left, Jordan Loucks’ pass made it to Lauren Loucks successfully at the top of the box. This time, Lauren finished for herself, getting a goal in the lower left corner.

“We started pretty slow,” CV-S coach Amy Garretson said. “I told them at halftime they needed to get their feet going. When we scored in the first two minutes of the second half, that definitely gave us the momentum.”

The Rams had a couple of good chances in the final 20 minutes, including a shot by Tori Rockefeller that appeared to get by Patriot goalie Kylie Graham. Rockefeller shot from the right side of the box to the left of Graham, but CV-S defender Kaylie Yerdon stepped in and cleared the ball.

“She’s an up-and-coming player definitely,” Garretson said of Yerdon. “And the awesome thing for us is she’s just a freshman.”

CV-S played without senior stopper Zane Ashford who broke her right collarbone in Friday’s win over Davenport and is out for the season.

“Hannah Lamouret came in and did an awesome job filling in for Zane,” Garretson said, pausing as tears filled her eyes. “Zane has meant so much to us. I know it was hard for her to stand on the sidelines and watch. It was emotional for me to see her not playing.”
