O-State field hockey loses SUNYAC semi in OT

Oneonta (11-4-3) followed a first-round bye with a 2-1 semifinal victory over visiting Brockport on Wednesday. Geneseo (7-7-5) rode two upsets to the title game, advancing in a shootout against third-seeded Cortland in the first round and beating No. 2 seed Buffalo State, 2-1, in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

The Red Dragons tied the Blue Knights, 1-1, during their regular-season meeting at Geneseo on Oct. 4.

O-State is attempting to win its 11th SUNYAC Tournament title and first since 2010. Saturday’s winner will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which starts with first-round games Nov. 16-17. The national championship game is set for Dec. 7 at Blossom Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.

The NCAA D-III Tournament bracket will be announced at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Admission to Saturday’s SUNYAC Tournament championship game is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. Children younger than age 5 and students with a valid college ID will be admitted for free.

E8 honors four Hawks

Hartwick College placed three women’s soccer players on the Empire 8 Conference’s Second Team this season, the Hawks announced Friday.

Schenevus graduates Jessica and Jayme Bentley joined fellow senior Cristina Sicari on the E8’s Second Team. The conference also selected freshman Mary Morrison as Hartwick’s representative on its Sportswoman of the Year squad.

The Hawks (8-7-3) must wait until Monday to see if they will earn a spot in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Suderley makes All-America

Hartwick senior forward Jared Suderley made the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Second Team for the upcoming men’s basketball season, the Hawks announced Friday.

One of 25 players honored, 2012-13 Empire 8 Conference scoring leader Suderley is coming off three straight seasons as the Hawks top scorer. He ranks sixth on Hartwick’s all-time scoring list, with 1,464 points.

Suderley also appeared on the Sporting News College Basketball Annual Magazine’s preseason All-America First Team back in September.

Hartwick opens the 2013-14 season against Ursinus at the Messiah College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. The Hawks’ home opener is a Nov. 24 non-conference game against Oswego.
