Collin Neer’s single that one-hopped the fence in left scored Josh Garufi with the winning run as Oneonta Post 259 defeated Sidney, 4-3, in eight innings Wednesday in a Legion baseball game at Oneonta High.
Garufi led off Oneonta’s eighth with an infield single off of losing pitcher Dan Shelton. Matt Bitzer’s sacrifice moved Garufi to second. After a flyout, Neer’s walkoff single ended it.
“It was a really good ballgame,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said. “There was good pitching and a lot of good plays. It was a well played Legion baseball game.”
Oneonta trailed, 3-2, entering the bottom of the seventh.
Neer drew a leadoff walk and went to second on Ben Moxley’s sacrifice. Neer then took third and Moxley advanced to second on a throwing error by Shelton.
Following a strikeout, David Wright’s sacrifice fly to center scored Neer to tie the score.
Sidney scored three times in the fifth off of Wright to take a 3-2 lead. Sidney had four of its five hits during the inning, including an RBI double by Billy Kozak, and RBI singles by Phil Youngs and Lucas Butcher.
“They had a good inning,” Jester said. “They were all good clean base hits.”
Oneonta scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Zach Pidgeon and a sacrifice fly by Zach King.
Shelton went the distance, striking out seven and walking four.
“After that first inning, he pitched ahead (in the count) the whole game,” Jester said of Shelton. “He had decent velocity and good command.”
Wright worked the first seven innings for Oneonta. He had six strikeouts and walked five.
“They had a base-runner in every inning except the seventh,” Jester said. “He made big pitches in big spots. He gutted it out pretty good for us.”
Noah Sheehan pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the victory.
Oneonta (7-2) will travel to Murnane Field today to play Utica Post 229.
