David Wright completed a three-hitter by retiring the final 16 batters and host Oneonta Post 259 pushed across two runs in the sixth inning of a 2-0 District Six Legion baseball victory over Montrose on Monday.
Wright (2-0) finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
“Today, he got ahead in the count,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Wright. “He walked five in his outing, but he commanded the game better than in his last two outings. He looked a lot sharper today and his fastball had a little more velocity.”
Ben Moxley started the Green Wave’s sixth with a single to right-center. Mark Giallanzo followed with a bunt single toward third. Both runners moved up a base on Wright’s sacrifice bunt. Zach Pidgeon then hit a two-run single to right-center.
Oneonta finished with six hits.
“We didn’t give them a lot of hard outs,” Jester said of his team’s hitting. “Give credit to their pitcher (Greg Myers). He kept us off-balance. He didn’t throw that hard, but kids were saying he had a good sinker.”
Both teams played error-free ball and Jester said Oneonta shortstop Collin Neer made a couple of difficult plays.
Oneonta (8-5, 3-0) will play at Binghamton Post 1645 at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
