A pair of area Division I athletes enjoyed successful seasons in the Big South Conference this spring.

Cooperstown graduate Caleb Edmonds earned a conference championship on the track as a red-shirt sophomore for Liberty College and Afton graduate Jessie Winans earned Big South all-tournament recognition as a junior shortstop for Coastal Carolina’s softball team.

Edmonds came within one place of qualifying for the NCAA Division I championships after finishing sixth in his heat in the NCAA East Preliminaries in May at Greensboro, N.C. Edmonds finished sixth in his heat in 14 minutes, 9.38 seconds. He ran the race’s final mile in 4:12 and the final 800 in 2:02. Edmonds finished 16th overall.

In the IC4A meet at Princeton on May 10, Edmonds finished third in 14:03.86 and in late April, he won the Big South title in the 5,000, crossing in 14:26.14.

Edmonds’ fastest time in the 5K came in the Stanford Invitational on March 30. He crossed in 13:57.09.

Winans, a five-time Daily Star Player of the Year, made it on the Big South Conference’s all-tournament after hitting .308 over five games, including a pair of home runs. She had the winning homer in Coastal Carolina’s 2-1 win over Liberty and gave CC a 3-2 lead with a fifth inning homer in a 4-3 loss to Winthrop that ended the Chanticleers’ season at 37-22. Winans also handled all 16 of her chances at shortstop cleanly during the tournament.

For the season, Winans batted .183 over 58 games. She had eight home runs, four doubles, 20 RBIs and scored 25 runs.
