Cooperstown, Sidney earn Legion victories

Keegan Wheelock-Tanner scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a passed ball as Cooperstown defeated Norwich’s junior squad, 5-4, in a Legion baseball game at Doubleday Field on Tuesday.

Wheelock-Tanner singled to start the eighth and took second on a single by Ethan Bliss. After Brett Adams reached on an error to load the bases, Wheelock-Tanner scored the winner on a passed ball.

Cooperstown tied the score at 4 in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Bliss, who finished 3-for-5.

Wheelock-Tanner and Adams had two hits apiece for Cooperstown (1-1), which is off until Tuesday.

Sidney 5, Montrose 4

Visiting Sidney rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to earn a District Six Legion victory at Montrose.

Billy Kozak led off Sidney’s seventh with a single. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Jon Wingate followed with an RBI single to tie the score at 3. Wingate then stole second and scored on Quinn Barnhart’s single to make it 4-3. Barnhart went to second on a passed ball before scoring on Dylan VanPelt’s single.

Montrose made it 5-4 on an RBI single by Nick Myers, but reliever Dan Shelton came in and induced a groundout before striking out the final batter.

Winning pitcher Josh Feyerabend, a freshman, struck out nine, walked three and scattered seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

“He looked good,” Sidney coach Matt Hafele said of Feyerabend.

Kozak and Wingate finished with two hits apiece.

Sidney (2-2) will travel to Windsor on Thursday.
