Big hits lead Hawkeyes to Saturday win

Staff Report

Ryan Donovan’s first home run of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season came with one out in the third inning Saturday, helping the host Cooperstown Hawkeyes to a 14-6 victory over the Elmira Pioneers at Doubleday Field.

Donovan’s three-run shot gave Cooperstown a 7-0 lead.

The Pioneers responded with five runs in the fourth inning off Hawkeyes starter Jack Stover, who got a no-decision after leaving with two out in the fourth. Chris Kalousdian’s grand slam off Stover highlighted Elmira’s rally, which ended when reliever Travis Tarleton induced a groundout to strand a Pioneers runner at third.

Cooperstown came back with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The spurt included a two-run double by catcher Nolan Ray.

Tarleton, who gave up a run in the fifth, earned his first pitching victory of the season. He struck out three, walked none, hit a batter and allowed four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Nate Lotze went 2-for-2 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs for the Hawkeyes, who got three runs from Austin March and two hits apiece from Donovan and Ray.

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, but their second game was postponed.

Cooperstown’s game Sunday night at Utica was rained out.

The Hawkeyes (8-5) visit Glens Falls at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, then host Amsterdam at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Doubleday Field.
