Hartwick College sophomore women’s water polo goalie Michaela Davies will represent the Australian Junior National Team during the FINA World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece, from Aug. 18-24.

Davies, who hails from Cronulla, Australia, is one of two goalies and 13 players picked for the squad. She also competed at the same event in 2011, helping Australia to the bronze medal.

Australia will compete in Group C at the event with matches against South Africa (Aug. 18), Ukraine (Aug. 19) and Uzbekistan (Aug. 20) before the qualification round begins Aug. 21. The playoff rounds will run from Aug. 22-24.

This past spring, Davies made 25 starts in goal with 178 saves for the Hawks. In her first appearance in a Hartwick uniform, she stopped 14 shots to pace the Hawks to an 8-7 win over then-No. 12 Indiana University on Feb. 16.

Davies earned all three CWPA weekly honors (Player, Rookie, Defensive) at least once over the course of the season and was named to the CWPA Western Division Second Team at the end of the year.

The Australian team leaves for Europe in late July for a pair of lead-up tournaments to the FINA Championships. The team is scheduled to play in the International Junior Women’s Tournament in Dunaujvaros, Hungary, from Aug. 2-5, then will compete in the Pythea Cup in Itea, Greece, from Aug. 11-15.
