Harry Hughes’ three goals and one assist weren’t enough for Hartwick College, which lost, 10-6, to visiting Utica College on Wednesday in a Empire 8 Conference men’s lacrosse game.

The teams combined for 24 penalties. Utica (5-3, 1-1) outscored the Hawks (4-5, 0-2), 5-1, after halftime.

Zach Gropper and Hughes scored man-up goals in the second quarter to give Hartwick a 4-3 lead.

The Pioneers scored the next two goals, but Hughes scored again 1:03 before halftime to tie the score at 5.

Utica then scored three times in the third quarter to take an 8-5 lead.

Hartwick’s final goal came during a man-up situation for Utica. Hughes scored it with 13:56 to go to make it 8-6. But Ben Winkler’s fourth goal of the game restored Utica’s lead to three.

Hughes has 171 goals at Hartwick _ five shy from passing Ian Ritcey as the Hawks’ all-time leading scorer.

Gropper had two goals and one assist, and Irvens Dupuy had a goal and an assist for Hartwick, which received 11 saves from Carl Lengel.

The Hawks will travel to Elmira at 3 p.m. Saturday.

O-State (6-12) scored five times in the fourth inning to tie the score at 5. Orlando hit an RBI double, Tom Hand had a sacrifice fly and Haussel contributed a two-run single in the inning.

Another sacrifice fly by Hand in the fifth inning tied it at 6, but Ithaca scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning on Tim Locastro’s RBI single.

Benji Parkes threw 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Red Dragons, who will host Plattsburgh at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Red Dragons go 2-2

Oneonta State’s trip to Hilton Head, S.C., last week resulted in victories over Virginia Wesleyan and the University of Scranton, and losses to Carroll University and Erskine College.

O-State (3-9) started last Tuesday with a 5-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. The Red Dragons were led by junior Michael Kennelly and sophomore Mackenzie Park. They won their singles matches and teamed for a victory at first doubles.

In a 6-3 loss to Carroll, Park and Adam Slifkin won singles matches in super tiebreakers. Benjamin Leighton teamed with Tyler Crill to win, 9-8 (8-6) at second doubles.

Straight-set victories by Kennelly and Leighton at first and third singles, respectiely, helped O-State to a 5-4 win over Scranton on Thursday. Park and Slifkin earned the decisive point in a third-set super tiebreaker.

Slifkin and Park earned singles victories in Oneonta’s loss to Erskine.
