Unadilla Valley played baseball to the bitter end Thursday.
The Storm failed to get an out in the seventh inning, allowing three runs on two errors, a triple and a wild pitch for a 4-3 season-opening loss to Midstate Athletic Conference host Greene.
“Our defense kind of flopped,” said UV coach Tom Locke, whose team took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. “We had two errors to start the inning, then Alex Kolisky tripled.”
Kolisky’s hit off reliever UV Brenden Brooker drove in two unearned runs to tie the score. Kolisky then scored the winner on a wild pitch by Brooker, who relieved UV starter Nate Shackelton with one out in the fifth inning.
Shackelton struck out three, walked four and gave up four of Greene’s six hits. He also went 2-for-3 with a run, driving in two with a third-inning double that gave the Storm a 3-0 lead.
Andrew Radke, who also doubled, went 3-for-3 for UV’s other hits.
Joe Browning earned the pitching victory in relief for the Trojans, who scored once in the bottom of the third.
UV visits Bainbridge-Guilford at 4:30 p.m. today for a MAC game.
