Hancock 6, Davenport 1

Ryan Smith struck out 17 and walked one in a one-hitter as defending Section Four Class D champion Hancock spoiled Davenport’s season opener with a non-league road victory.

“He’s not the kid you want to see the first time out of the gym,” Davenport coach Jim Wolfe said of Smith, who allowed a leadoff single to Travis Briggs in the fourth inning. Briggs later scored when Hancock threw the ball away on a steal by losing pitcher Josh Davi, who walked. “He’s their ace, a big lefty who threw the ball hard. We had a hard time catching up.”

Smith’s batterymate, Eli Holton, hit a grand slam in a five-run fourth inning that put Hancock ahead, 6-0.

Davenport visits Morris for a non-leaguer at noon Saturday.

Margaretville 4, Gilboa 3

Kyle Short struck out 13 and walked three in six innings and Matt VanValkenburgh earned the save despite giving up a run in the seventh as Margaretville opened its season with a non-league road win over Delaware League rival Gilboa.

VanValkenburgh contributed a two-run single in the second inning for the Blue Devils, who got a 2-for-4 effort from Mitch Hull.

Christian Cooper homered in the sixth for Gilboa, who stranded runners at second and third in the sixth inning and was held to one run in the seventh after loading the bases with none out.
