UV edged in baseball opener; Rockets hold on


Cooper went 3-for-4 for the Wildcats, who received two hits apiece from Cole Fancher and Nick Vogiatzis.

Losing pitcher Hunter Grace struck out eight and walked two. He was relieved by eighth-grader Fancher, who struck out four and walked none over the last two innings.

Gilboa visits Stamford for a non-leaguer on Tuesday.

Roxbury 11, Stamford 10

Greg Keating hit a two-run homer with two out in the top of the seventh, but winning pitcher Eric Shultis got a game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded to secure a Delaware League victory for host Roxbury.

The Rockets got the first two outs of the seventh before Shultis walked the No. 9 batter, setting up Keating’s homer down the left-field line. Matt Anderson then singled and Greg Mattice was intentionally walked, but a passed ball advanced the runners and led to another intentional walk to Erik Ehrhart. Shultis got out of the bases-loaded jam by striking out Geoff Mattice with a full-count fastball at his knees.

The Rockets trailed, 8-3, before scoring eight times int he fifth. Jacob Davis keyed Roxbury’s big inning with a bases-loaded single that drove in two runs. Tyler Faulkner contributed an RBI double in the fifth, when Roxbury got four hits and took advantage of two Stamford errors.

Losing pitcher Matt Anderson went 2-for-3 with three runs for the Indians, who received two doubles and two RBIs from Dustin King.

Sam Nash had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Rockets, who host Hunter-Tannersville on Tuesday.
