Edmeston baseball opens with walkoff win

Linton Wainright drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday as the Edmeston baseball team beat Tri-Valley League foe Morris, 8-7, on a walkoff single.

Wainright went 2-for-3 in the season opener for the Panthers, who scored four times in the seventh. He also got the pitching victory after relieving starter Michael Clark in the fourth inning. Wainright struck out three, walked one and allowed one run in four scoreless innings.

Clayton Lyon contributed two hits for Edmeston, which hosts Gilbertsville-Mount Upton on Thursday.

Tim Parsons and Tyler Ouimet each had two hits and three RBIs to lead host Bainbridge-Guilford to a non-division Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

Winning pitcher Austin Bauerle struck out seven, walked two and sacttered five hits in five innings to earn the season-opening pitching win.

Corbin Palmer also had two hits for the Bobcats, who host Afton on Monday.

Mason Alford doubled and singled for the Storm (0-2).

Winning pitcher Quinn Barnhart struck out five and allowed one run over five innings to lead visiting Unatego to a non-league win.

Barnhart also hit a two-run double in the fifth, when the Spartans (1-1) scored three times to take a 3-0 lead. Jon Wingate hit a sacrifice fly to score the final run of the inning. Wingate also had a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score Kellen Komenda.

Of Barnhart’s pitching, Unatego coach Frank Microni said: “He threw well on a cold day. He had good control and good command of his pitches.”

The Spartans host Windsor on Monday.

Ben Smith, Luke VanRiper and Joe Kelly had three hits apiece to lead visiting Richfield Springs to a Tri-Valley League win in the season opener for both teams.

Smith and VanRiper had three RBIs apiece. Winning pitcher Kelly, who drove in two runs, struck out eight over four innings.

Logan Barra went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks for Laurens, which will travel to Schenevus on Tuesday.

Katie Richvalsky struck out 10 and walked three in a two-hitter as visiting Richfield Springs won the season opener for both teams.

Richvalsky also went 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park homer in the sixth inning for the Indians, who received two hits apiece from Emma Miner and Rebecca Smith.

Shalyn Tilley singled in the third inning and Vicky Eichhorn doubled in the fifth for the Leopards, who are at Schenevus on Tuesday.

Eighth-grader Catherine Johnson struck out 13 and batterymate Sarah Lawrence homered for Edmeston, which opened the season with a Tri-Valley League rout of visiting Morris.

Lawrence, also an eighth-grader, finished 3-for-4 for the Panthers, who received two hits apiece from Sam Harrington and Katlin Talbot.

Bridgette Colburn and McKenna Hungerford each went 3-for-4 for the Mustangs, who trailed, 14-0, after four innings.

The Rockets jumped to an 8-0 lead after one inning. They’ll host a non-leaguer against Hancock on Monday.

Cora Bruno went 2-for-4 with a double to pace the Blue Devils.

Emerson Kelby allowed one point in his straight-set victory over Dustin Flanagan at first singles, leading Oneonta High to a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory at home.

Aaron Earle-Richardson, Boru Jerry Li and McKenna Rowe also earned singles victories for the Yellowjackets (2-0), who took two of three doubles matches from Windsor (0-1).
