Oneonta State outhit visiting Buffalo State on Friday but dropped both ends of a SUNY Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, 4-3 and 8-7.
The Red Dragons (8-16, 3-7) rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the fifth inning of the second game. Nicole Brieva drove in two runs with a single in the fifth for O-State, which scored again in the sixth to pull to 8-5.
With two out in the seventh, Chandler Campbell had an RBI double and Nicole Marzillo hit a run-scoring single before Maddie Coneys struck out the last batter to give Buffalo State (15-11, 8-4) the victory. O-State lost despite holding a 12-10 advantage in hits.
The Red Dragons had an 11-10 edge in hits in the opener but allowed four runs in the seventh inning as the Bengals erased a 3-0 deficit.
Brieva had a two-run double in the second inning and Kalyn Deso singled in a run in the fifth for Oneonta.
Lindsay Goff’s RBI single in the seventh started Buffalo State’s rally, which was highlighted by a two-run triple by Brianna Fenski that tied the score with two out. Fenski scored the winner on a single by Aleesha Williams.
Brianna Rivera went 3-for-4 in the first game for Oneonta, which hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Ithaca on Tuesday.
Wheaton 7, O-State 2
Colette Lankowicz earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at fourth singles for Oneonta State, which dropped a non-conference match on the road.
Lankowicz also teamed with Emily Maggiore for an 8-3 victory at second doubles for the Red Dragons (9-9), who play Hunter College on Saturday at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing.
TRACK AND FIELD
Steve Kuznia swept the hurdles events to lead Oneonta State’s men at the Cortland Invitational.
Kuznia won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.27 seconds and placed first in the 400 hurdles in an Eastern College Athletic Conference-qualifying time of 55.94.
