Two games into the season and Oneonta High senior Chris Pindar has yet to make an out and sophomore left-hander Brock Eichler has two pitching victories.
In a rematch of last season’s Southern Tier Athletic Conference final that Oneonta won, 10-2, the Yellowjackets received a home run and a triple from Pindar and six solid innings from Eichler in a STAC win at home.
After JC scored unearned run in the top of the first, Pindar led off Oneonta’s first with a home run into the trees in left-center. Jonathan Vega followed with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Sheehan to make it 2-1.
Pindar, who went 2-for-2 in the Yellowjackets’ 5-0, season-opening win over Cobleskill on Friday, walked to start to Oneonta’s third. He went to third on a hit-and-run single by Vega and scored on a throwing error. Vega advanced to third on the play and scored on another sacrifice fly by Sheehan.
Pindar’s RBI triple that short-hopped the fence in center in the fourth inning made it 5-1. He finished 2-for-2.
The Wildcats scored a run in the fifth, but Oneonta answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Matt Bitzer had a two-run single in the inning.
Eichler finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
“He threw strikes and we played pretty good defense,” OHS coach Joe Hughes said of Eichler, who threw two innings and earned the win in Oneonta’s opener.
Vega finished with two hits and two runs scored as the defending Class B state champions extended their winning streak to 18 games.
“We started six sophomores today,” Hughes said. “We had a good mix of guys contributing throughout the lineup. We’re excited about playing well.”
