O-State softball sweeps doubleheader

Oneonta State received a one-hitter from sophomore Katie O’Flynn in a five-inning, 10-0 victory in the first game and then beat visiting Canton, 7-6, in eight innings in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Monday.

O’Flynn had eight strike outs in earning her fourth victory of the season.

The first game ended on a three-run homer to left by freshman Meghan Foster. Senior Kalyn Deso contributed a two-run homer during the Red Dragons’ three-run first inning.

O-State (7-13) scored the winning run in the second game on a Deso’s RBI double with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Traci Lichtenstein went 4-for-4, and Chandler and Lauren Campbell each went 3-for-4.

Rachel Hitt earned her third win of the season.

O-State will host Brockport in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday.

HONORSHawks’ Hughes recognized

Hartwick College senior Harry Hughes was named the Empire 8 Conference’s men’s lacrosse player of the week.

Hughes finished the week with eight goals and three assists. He had three goals in Hartwick’s 10-6 loss to Utica on Wednesday. On Saturday, Hughes had five goals in a 12-8 win over Elmira.

During the win over Elmira, Hughes became the Hawks’ all-time leading goal scorer. He scored his 176th goal to pass 1995 Hartwick graduate Ian Ritcey.

Hughes has 36 goals on the season, which leads the Empire 8 Conference.

Hughes, who’ll lead the Hawks into their E8 home game against Nazareth at 3 p.m. Saturday, also shared Hartwick’s Hawks of the Week honor with women’s lacrosse player Caroline Stanford.

Stanford, a sophomore defender, scored a free-position goal in Hartwick’s 18-12 win over Alfred on Saturday. She also had two groundballs and won a faceoff. The next day in a 13-10 los to Elmira, she had her college high of seven groundballs and caused a turnover.
