No-hitter sends Hancock into state semifinals

STAFF REPORT

Ryan Smith threw a no-hitter and Eli Holton hit an RBI triple in the third inning as Midstate Athletic Conference baseball champion Hancock defeated Section Three’s Oriskany, 2-0, in a Class D state quarterfinal Saturday at Broome Community College.

Smith, a senior left-hander, struck out 12 and walked two in his second varsity no-hitter – the first came during his junior season. Smith also was part of a combined no-hitter as a sophomore.

“He had a great mix of pitches,” Hancock coach Brandon Olbrys said of Smith, who also scored the game’s first run. “Most of all, he competed on the mound. They were really battling up there. They got his pitch count to 100. There were a lot of full counts.”

Hancock (19-4), which beat Deposit to win its fifth straight Section Four Class D title, scored twice in the third inning.

Smith reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Holton’s triple to left-center, that one-hopped the fence. Three pitches later, Holton scored on a passed ball.

The Wildcats will play Section 10’s Heuvelton in a state semfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday back at BCC. The winner will play Section Five’s Batavia Notre Dame or Section 11’s Smithtown Christian in the final at 4 p.m. Saturday at BCC.

Hancock lost in the Class D state final last season.
