Ex-Hartwick standouts headed to N.Y. Hall

STAFF REPORT

Hartwick College will be well represented at the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Nick Lambros and Tim McGraw, both of whom played and coached men’s basketball for Hartwick, are part of this year’s induction class. The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. July 13 at the Hilton Hotel in Troy.

Lambros is the all-time wins leader at Hartwick, guiding the program to a 353-191 record from 1977-98. He was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 1979 and earned NCAA Division III Coach of the Year honors in 1988, when he steered Hartwick to an appearance in the national semifinals.

Lambros graduated from Hartwick in 1959. He played four years of baseball and basketball for the Warriors, as they were known at the time.

Seven times Lambros coached Hartwick to 20-win seasons and his teams qualified for seven ECAC tournaments. He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004. Lambros also was the first inductee into Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

McGraw played for Hartwick from 1984-88. He graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer – a distinction he still held until Jared Suderley passed him this past winter. McGraw scored 1,878 points in a Hartwick uniform.

McGraw, who played for Lambros, also shot 88.9 percent from the free throw line at Hartwick and made 34 straight from the line in his sophomore season. He led Hartwick to the 1988 NCAA Division III final four and earned all-tournament honors. McGraw, also inducted into Hartwick’s Hall in 1995, was the head coach for Hartwick from 1998-2003.

To purchase tickets for the event, call Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame Executive Director Rene LeRoux at 518-877-5170 or email her at jaryla@aol.com.
