Mike Jester couldn’t have asked for much more from starting pitcher Kragh Delello on Friday at Maine-Endwell.
Delello struck out four and walked none in a five-hitter, but Oneonta Post 259 dropped a District Six Division II Legion baseball game, 1-0.
“He was solid,” Jester said of Oneonta High senior Delello (1-1), who kept Maine-Endwell scoreless through five complete innings. “He worked ahead in the count all night long, and with his off-speed stuff, he’s been mixing it up well.
“We’ve been playing some pretty good baseball to start the season,” he continued. “We don’t walk people and we play good defense, but both teams played some good defense tonight.”
Neither team committed an error in a game that featured a combined nine hits, including doubles from M-E’s Jason Wasilnak and Adam Gallagher for the only extra-base hits. The latter hurt Oneonta in the sixth inning, though, as Gallagher doubled to the right-center field gap with two out to set up Maine-Endwell’s run. Gallagher then stole third and scored on a single up the middle by Johnny Plouffe.
“And that was the only scoring in the game,” Jester said.
Maine-Endwell starting pitcher Alex Zimmerman countered Delello’s effort by striking out six and walking two in an efficient four-hitter. OHS freshman Keaton Mark singled twice for the Green Wave, who also received singles from Josh Garufi and Lucas DeJoy.
Oneonta (8-5, 3-2) will visit Utica Adrean Post at 11 a.m. Saturday, then travels to Conlon Field for a 1 p.m. game Sunday against Binghamton Post 1645.
The Green Wave, who also visit Johnson City on Wednesday, will return home June 29 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Horseheads at Oneonta High.
