Oneonta ousts Sidney in districts

The Daily Star

Ben Moxley’s two-run single in the sixth inning put Oneonta Post 259 ahead for keeps in an 8-4 District Six Tournament losers’ bracket Legion baseball victory that eliminated Sidney on Sunday at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

After Sidney tied the score at 4 with two runs in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Feyerabend and an RBI single by Dylan VanPelt, defending District Six champion Oneonta scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Moxley’s single made it 6-4. Collin Neer then hit an RBI groundout and winning pitcher David Wright capped the inning with an RBI single.

The double-elimination tournament continues today at Conlon Field.

Oneonta (21-16) will play Endicott Post 82 at 5 p.m. in an elimination game. If the Green Wave win, they’ll play Binghamton Post 1645 or Vestal Post 89 in the losers’ bracket final at 8 p.m.

Should Oneonta win both games today, it would play in the championship bracket Wednesday against Binghamton or Vestal. Oneonta would have to beat the winners’ bracket champion twice. The first game would start at 5 p.m. followed by a second, if necessary, at 8 p.m.

Oneonta coach Mike Jester said left-hander Zach Pidgeon will get the start against Endicott today.

The Green Wave opened the tournament Saturday with a 15-3 win over Binghamton Post 80. Oneonta then lost, 14-8, to Vestal in its second game Saturday.

Against Sidney, Wright went all nine innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out 11 and walked five.

“He got into some deep counts that pushed his pitch count up,” Jester said of Wright, who is 4-1. “As the game went on, his fastball had more pop and his curveball had more sharpness to it. Overall, he pitched pretty well, but I wish he didn’t throw as many pitches as he did.”

Oneonta scored four times in the first inning off of losing pitcher Quinn Barnhart. Moxley and Collin Neer walked to start the inning before Wright reached on a bunt base hit to load the bases. Pidgeon and Ben Payton followed with RBI groundouts and Zach King capped the inning with an RBI double.

Wright and King had two hits apiece for Oneonta.

Billy Kozak had two doubles and an RBI for Sidney, which received two hits from Matt Fischer.

Sidney opened the tournament with a 5-4 loss to Binghamton Post 1645 on Saturday.

Barnhart’s RBI single in the third inning scored Kozak to give Sidney a 2-0 lead. Fischer’s RBI double in the fourth made it 3-0.

But Binghamton scored once in the sixth and four more in the eighth off of losing pitcher Dan Shelton to take a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Lucas Butcher and Jon Wingate walked with two outs. Kozak followed with an RBI single, his third of the day. After Barnhart walked to load the bases, Zack Decker flied out to center to end it.

In Oneonta’s win over Binghamton Post 80, Pidgeon went 4-for-5 with six RBIs. He hit a grand slam to right-center in the fifth inning, had an RBI double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth inning. Wright doubled and scored in front of Pidgeon in the third and fourth innings.

Moxley (5-3) earned the win. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs – one earned – walked none and struck out seven.

“His fastball got stronger as the game went on,” Jester said of Moxley, The Daily Star’s Player of the Year in 2012.

Moxley finished with two hits, and Wright and Matt Horne each contributed two hits and three runs.

Against Vestal, Pidgeon had two hits and two RBIs, as did Zach King, and Neer had two hits.

Oneonta tied the score at 8 after scoring a run in the sixth inning, but Vestal scored two runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Vestal’s Kevin Franz hit an RBI single in the seventh as Vestal took a 10-8 lead.
