BCANY honors Franklin’s Dutcher

Franklin girls basketball coach Mike Dutcher earned Class D Coach of the Year honors from the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc., according to the spring 2013 BCANY newsletter released this month.

Dutcher led the Purple Devils to the Tri-Valley League championship and their first Section Four Class D title in girls basketball this past winter, when Franklin went 20-1. The program’s loss came in the Class D state quarterfinals, 51-46, to Section Three’s Oriskany.

The BCANY selected Dutcher as its Section Four Class D Coach of the Year earlier this year. It also picked his junior point guard, Jordan Beers, as its Section Four Class D Player of the Year and as one of its top 50 players in New York.

Other New York Coach of the Year winners were Ossining’s Dan Ricci (Class AA), Maine-Endwell’s Sonny Spera (A), Irvington’s Gina Maher (B) and Harpursville’s Kurt Ehrensbeck (C).

Maher’s team cruised to state and Federation titles after beating Oneonta High, 55-53, in a Class B state semifinal.

OHS lacrosse team has All-Star

Oneonta High junior Jeremy Leary earned Section Four Division II First Team All-Star recognition for this past boys lacrosse season, Yellowjackets coach Jeff Armer announced earlier this week.

Attackman Leary, who served OHS as a co-captain this spring, was a second-teamer last season. Armer said he believed Leary is the first OHS first-teamer in program history.

Armer also announced that senior co-captain John Gell will play in the Section Four Exceptional Senior Game later this year. Armer added that Gell will play lacrosse next season at SUNY Delhi, a nationally ranked program coached by Leary’s father, Bob.
