Senior Sean Bernstein of Oneonta State won his heat in the 100 meters Friday on the second day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Bernstein had the second-fastest time in qualifying, crossing in 10.47 seconds. It sets up busy day for Bernstein on Saturday, the final day of the competition.
First, he’ll join freshmen Joe Carr, Jake Alviene and Thomas Wheeler in the 400 relay final. That foursome ran a school record 41.02 in Thursday’s preliminary and had the second-fastest qualifying time. That race is scheduled to start at 3:40 p.m.
The 100 final will start at 5:10 p.m. Bernstein is seeded second for that race behind Wisconsin Eau Clair’s Thurgood Dennis.
Finally, at 6:20 p.m., Bernstein will defend his D-III title in the 200. On Thursday, he had fastest preliminary time, crossing in 20.87. Carr also qualified for the final in the 200.
O-State had two other athletes qualify for finals Friday.
Schenevus graduate Pat Weinert, a sophomore, broke his school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 192 feet, 3 inches. Weinert was seeded 11th, but finished ninth in qualifying to get into Saturday’s final. He broke his school record by nearly 3 feet.
Alviene qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles, finishing ninth in 14.55. He qualified by .001 of a second. Alviene will run in the final at 4:25 p.m. Saturday.
