Zach Pidgeon and Ben Payton had extra-base hits in the first inning Sunday, but Oneonta Post 259 lost the championship game of its Green Wave Wood Bat Classic, 10-3, to Brockville, Ontario, at Damaschke Field.

Pidgeon finished with two hits in the final, including an RBI triple that sparked Oneonta’s three-run first. Payton followed with an RBI double en route to a two-hit day, but winning pitcher Pierre Burns threw six scoreless innings thereafter to lead Brockville to the title.

“He had good command around the plate,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Burns, who struck out two, walked one and scattered seven hits. “He’s a pretty decent pitcher.”

Stephan Coleman had four singles and two RBIs to pace Brockville, which scored four times in the first inning against Oneonta starter Connor Tavarone (0-1).

The Green Wave (18-14) opened play Sunday with a 9-2 semifinal defeat of Bradford, Pa. Winning pitcher Ben Moxley (4-3) struck out eight and walked two in a four-hitter. He also had two hits and an RBI for Oneonta, which got two hits and two runs from David Wright.

Post 259 turned a 1-0 lead into a 6-0 advantage with a five-run fifth, when it scored three times on bases-loaded walks.

The Green Wave advanced to the semifinal by beating Corning, 1-0, on Saturday at Oneonta High. Pidgeon led off the seventh inning with a triple that two-bounced the fence in right-center, then scored when the right fielder overthrew his cutoff man. The walkoff error made a winner of Matt Bitzer (5-2), who struck out one, walked one and allowed no runner to reach third in a three-hitter. Losing pitcher Nick Westgate also went the distance and limited Oneonta to three hits.

Pidgeon also scored the winning run in Post 259’s 4-3 victory in eight innings over Cranston, R.I., on Saturday at Oneonta High. Pidgeon singled with two out in the top of the eighth and stole second before Payton walked, setting up Zach King for an RBI single to center field.

Bitzer threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth, getting two groundouts and a strikeout to secure the victory for fellow reliever Collin Neer (1-0).

The Green Wave opened tournament play with an 8-1 loss to the Montreal Titans on Friday night at Damaschke Field. Winning pitcher Brendan Quinn struck out three and walked two in a two-hitter. Pidgeon struck out eight in five innings but took the loss and fell to 2-2. Payton hit the first of his three doubles over the weekend.

Oneonta hosts Endicott at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Oneonta High.
