Ryan Packard’s fifth-inning grand slam provided the winning runs as Oneonta’s Blue All-Star team defeated New Hartford, 8-7, Monday in the 12-and-under Williamsport Little League Sectional Tournament at Corning’s Denison Park.
Unfortunately for Oneonta, it wasn’t enough for it to advance in the tournament. All three teams in Oneonta’s pool finished 1-1, but New Hartford and Liverpool advanced based on a tiebreaker that factored runs allowed against innings played.
Liverpool defeated Oneonta, 11-1, Saturday in a game called after four innings because of the mercy rule.
“It was a solid effort by our team,” said Oneonta coach Tim McGraw, whose team won the District Seven title last week with a 4-3 win over Maine-Endwell. “We had a couple of tough breaks, a couple of bad hops, but both teams did make some nice plays in the field. It was a back-and-forth game and we pulled it out. It was a really nice win for Oneonta.”
Oneonta trailed, 5-4, entering the top of the fifth. Tim McGraw and Evan Sitts singled in the inning, and Nick Lutz reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases. With two outs, Packard’s homer to center gave Oneonta an 8-5 lead.
New Hartford answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but winning pitcher Tanner Beang worked around a two-out hit in the sixth to seal the victory. The final out came on a come-backer to Beang.
Cam Neer hit two doubles and scored a run, McGraw had two hits, including a double, and Sitts had two hits. Sitts homered to center in the second inning but was called out for missing first base.
“Evan hit the ball very well,” coach McGraw said.
New Hartford, which hit three homers, also had a home run disallowed in the third inning as its batter failed to touch home.
Oneonta will close its season with a tournament in Endicott that starts July 22.
