Green Wave advance in 10 innings

The Daily Star

Winning pitcher Ben Moxley hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning of Oneonta's 7-6 Legion baseball victory over Endicott in a losers' bracket game of the District Six Tournament on Monday at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

Oneonta (22-16) is three wins away from winning its second straight District Six title. The Green Wave will play Binghamton Post 1645 at 5 p.m. today in the losers' bracket final.

If Oneonta wins, it will need to beat winners' bracket champion Vestal twice. The first game is scheduled for 8 tonight. The second game, if necessary, will be played at 6 p.m. Friday. All of the games are at Conlon Field.

The Green Wave and Binghamton were supposed to play the losers' bracket final Monday night, but rain forced the game's postponement.

“Fortunately, the rain helped us out,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said when asked if he'd have enough fresh arms to make it through the tournament.

Jester said Matt Bitzer will start today's game and Moxley will be available for relief against Binghamton. Zach Pidgeon and David Wright will be among the candidates to start against Vestal tonight, assuming Oneonta advances.

Against Endicott, Matt Horne reached on an error to start Oneonta's 10th. He advanced to second on Connor Tavarone's sacrifice bunt and went to third on a passed ball. Moxley then lined a single to center to give the Green Wave a 7-6 lead.

Collin Neer threw a 1-2-3 10th to get the save.

After Oneonta scored an unearned run in the ninth to take a 6-4 lead, Endicott tied it in the bottom of the inning off of Moxley on an RBI double by Henry Pelliciotti and an RBI single from Dylan Nardocci.

Wright went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs to lead Oneonta's offense. His two-run homer to right in the top of the seventh gave the Green Wave a 6-4 lead.

Moxley finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. He hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to make it 5-2.

Peter Brunetta also had two hits for Oneonta.

Pidgeon threw the first seven innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one.

“He had tremendous command the whole game,” Jester said of Pidgeon, a left-hander who pitched for Ithaca College this past spring. “He worked ahead in the count the whole game.”

Oneonta avenged a pair of one-run losses to Endicott during the regular season.

The Green Wave won twice against Binghamton earlier this season. Their lone loss in the District Six Tournament came against Vestal, a 14-8 setback Saturday.
