PLAY Ball set for Friday
National Baseball Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson and Juan Marichal will be the featured guests during the Hall of Fame Weekend’s annual PLAY Ball event, which runs from 8-11 a.m. Friday in Cooperstown.
PLAY Ball is a museum fundraiser that supports the Hall’s educational programs and internship scholarships. Participants receive on-field, round-robin interaction with the Hall of Famers, along with special mementos to commemorate their experiences.
The event begins at 8 a.m. Friday with an exclusive reception in the Hall’s Plaque Gallery. Following photos and stories, PLAY Ball participants will receive two hours of instruction from their Hall of Fame guides at a Cooperstown-area diamond.
A limited number of spaces for PLAY Ball remain, and a reservation is required. Event pricing is $450 for museum members and $600 for non-members. To reserve a spot, call 607-547-0397.
PLAY Ball is part of Hall of Fame Weekend, which will be highlighted by Sunday’s inductions of Hank O’Day, Jacob Ruppert and Deacon White.
The Hall will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, and from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
Soccer camps continue
The Headwaters Soccer Club is accepting registrations for its 2013 summer camps.
Camps will be held for boys and girls ages 7-17, including team camps.
Cost is $60 per camper per week. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a water bottle.
The remaining camps run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays on the following dates:
Monday-Aug. 2: at Mine Kill State Park.
Aug. 5-9: at Oneonta State.

Sidney to host road race Saturday
The Cullman Community Days 5K Race/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Keith Clark Park in Sidney.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Keith Clark Park. Entry fee is $10, which includes snacks and water at the finish line, along with awards for overall winners and age-group winners.
Proceeds from the race will go to the Sidney High School Varsity Letters Club.

West End Archery is accepting sign-ups for its eight-week Fall Techno Hunt League, which starts Monday.

Sidney youth football sign-ups set
Sidney Youth Football will hold equipment handouts and sign-up nights from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Sidney Civic Center’s third floor, above the DMV.
Youths in grades K-6 may play. The organization also is offering flag football for youths in grades K-2.
Youths in grades 3-6 who already have registered must attend one of the nights for equipment handout.
Those who still need to register must bring a copy of the player’s birth certificate and registration fee ($45 for youth football; $30 for flag football).

All-sport camp starts Monday
The 17th annual Eastman Associates Munchkin All-Sport Camp will run from Monday through Aug. 1 at Oneonta State.
The O-State women’s soccer team will run the camp, which is designed for boys and girls ages 5-12. Activities include badminton, basketball, kickball, racquetball, soccer, T-ball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Cost is $60 per camper (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) or $90 per camper (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) and includes a T-shirt. Campers should wear athletic attire, including sneakers, and bring their own lunches.

Soccer club to host British camps
The Cooperstown Soccer Club and Challenger Sports will host British Soccer Camps from Monday through Aug. 2 at Cooperstown Elementary.

The Headwaters Soccer Club will hold the fifth annual Ouleout Creek Charity Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 in Franklin.
Entry fee for the scramble tournament is $60 per person and includes greens fees, cart and buffet. First-, second- and third-place teams will receive awards. Golfers may register as teams or as individuals.

Buck Fever Night is Aug. 10
Whitetails Unlimited will sponsor the Oneonta Area Buck Fever Night on Aug. 10 at the Oneonta Elks Club at 84 Chestnut St. in Oneonta.
The event will feature a two-meat dinner, an auction and prizes. Proceeds will benefit local youth hunting programs such as 4H and Archery in the Schools.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown will host the second annual BASE Race on Aug. 11.
The event features a competitive 10-kilometer race at 8 a.m. and a family-style 5K run at 8:15 a.m. Both events start and finish at the CSC.
Registration is $25 for adults and $50 for families until race day, when registration will be $40 for individuals and $65 for families.
Proceeds support outreach for the “Be A Superior Example” program, which promotes the concepts of healthy lifestyle choices by educating students about the dangers of performance-enhancing substances.

The Oneonta City Recreation Department and the Susquehanna Bass Association will host the City of Oneonta’s 56th annual Fishing Derby at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park.
The derby is a free catch-and-release competition open to youths ages 5-15. All participants must provide their own poles, bait/lures and a clean bucket.
Parents/guardians must complete a registration/release form for their children to be eligible to participate in the derby.
Parents may pre-register their children for the derby at the recreation office during regular business hours. Event-day registrations will be accepted from 3-3:45 p.m.
The Bass Association also will host activities during the sign-in/registration period. The derby will last for one hour. An awards ceremony will follow.

The Oneonta Country Club will host the Otsego County Amateur Golf Tournament from Aug. 24-25.
Known as the Atchinson Cup, the Otsego Amateur is a 36-hole competition featuring championship and net flights that will be determined by handicaps.
There will be 10 players per flight for the tournament, which is open to all Otsego County residents and non-residents who are members of Otsego County golf courses.

<\Bz18>Fingers to host Seniors Open
National Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers will serve as celebrity host for the 31st annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open and Pro-Am Golf Tournament, which runs Sept. 3-6 at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.
Fingers, a 1992 Hall inductee with 341 career saves, will participate in the Sept. 3 Pro-Am, which begins with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. Fingers also will speak at the fundraiser dinner later that day.
Proceeds from the Pro-Am will benefit Pathfinder Village, a residential community in Edmeston dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Proceeds also will benefit the Hall’s educational programs.

The Seniors Open follows Sept. 4-6 and will feature close to 100 of the top senior professionals in the country. Tom Eubank of Ellijay, Ga., shot a tournament record-tying 64 in the final round to win the 2012 Seniors Open.

Norwich will host an inaugural 5K run/walk to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 at East Park.

Pre-registration is $20 for adults and $15 for students. Registration on the day of the event will be $25 for adults and $20 for students.
The top three men and women in the adult (18-and-older), student (17-and-under) and senior (50-and-older) categories will receive awards for the 5K run. The top three men and women in the 5K walk also will receive awards.

The Boys of Fall Football League is seeking teams to join its full-contact league for the 2013 season.
The Tri-Valley Colts and the Richfield Indians play in the league, which started in 2011 and held its first season in 2012. Players ages 8-18 are eligible to participate.
