O-State track standouts honored

Staff Report

Two Oneonta State student-athletes made the USTFCCCA track and field academic scholars team for the 2013 season, the Red Dragons announced Thursday.

Graduate Kacy Boburka and sophomore Rob Farrell are among the 595 athletes honored from across the country in Division III.

One of 11 women recognized from the SUNY Athletic Conference, Boburka earned the award for the third straight season. Farrell, who has two consecutive awards, is one of six SUNYAC men honored.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and either compete in an NCAA indoor or outdoor championship, finish the regular season ranked in the nation's top 35 or rank in the national top 25 in a relay on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

O-State's women's track and field team also earned its eighth straight distinction as one of 148 D-III squads recognized for cumulative accomplishments in the classroom. The honor, which was given to four SUNYAC women's teams, is earned by attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.10 or better.

O-State hires trainer

Oneonta State announced Friday the hiring of Alicia Simmonds as its head athletic trainer, effective Aug. 1.

Simmonds replaces Danielle Lee, who left to pursue a degree in occupational therapy.

Simmonds had been the assistant athletic trainer at Fredonia State University since 2007. During her tenure, she also was an instructor in the Sport Management and Exercise Science Department.

Simmonds is a 2006 graduate of Wingate University, where she received her bachelor's degree in athletic training. She also earned her master's degree in athletic training from California University of Pennsylvania in May 2007.
