SK, Laurens girls win Grasso openers

Tori Rockefeller had a game-high 17 points, seven rebounds, six steals and six assists to lead South Kortright to a 51-37 girls basketball victory over Gilbertsville-Mount Upton on Friday in the opening round of the Pat Grasso Tournament at Laurens.

Rockefeller scored six points in a 17-3 second quarter that helped the defending Delaware League champion Rams to a 26-18 lead at halftime in the season opener for both teams.

“We made a few defensive changes,” SK coach Josh Burroughs said. “With the speed of Rockefeller, that allowed us to score in transition.”

Brianna Laing contributed 14 points for the Rams, who will face Laurens in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mackenzie Talbot finished with a team-high 16 points for Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, which was outscored, 17-4, in the third quarter. The Raiders will play Afton in the consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Charlotte Lee scored a game-high 14 points to lead host Laurens to victory in the first round of the Pat Grasso Tournament.

Lee hit two three-pointers in the second quarter, when she scored eight points to help the Leopards to a 26-14 cushion at halftime in the season opener for both teams.

Courtney Sherry had six of her eight points in the fourth quarter for Laurens, which will face South Kortright in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Payton Cutting matched Lee with 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Afton (0-1), which will play Gilbertsville-Mount Upton in the consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday.
