G-MU two-hits Franklin in softball

Staff Report

Nine strikeouts and one walk accompanied Marissa Mehlrose’s two-hitter Monday as host Gilbertsville-Mount Upton defeated Franklin, 2-0, in a Tri-Valley League softball game.

“It’s a really good win,” G-MU coach Tina Cole said. “Defensively, it’s probably the best game I’ve seen us play.”

Neither side made an error. Franklin’s Jordan Beers and Marisa Cawley combined on a four-hitter.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the fourth. Whitney Gilbert walked. She advanced to third on a single by Katie Schultes and scored on a throwing error. G-MU made it 2-0 in the fifth, when Courtney Baker walked, went to second on a sacrifice by Lauren Hill and scored on a single to right by Kelsey Ross.

Of Mehlrose’s pitching, Cole said: “She placed the ball really well. She’s really working on moving the ball around and not putting it over the middle of the plate.”

The Raiders (2-1, 2-1) will host Morris on Wednesday.
