OHS tennis loses first, but Kelby wins again

Emerson Kelby remained undefeated this season, but host Oneonta High tennis suffered its first team loss, 6-1, at the hands of Southern Tier Athletic Conference rival Norwich on Thursday.

Kelby swept Alexander Stewart, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles to move to 5-0.

Kelby won his first 17 matches last season before falling, 6-3, 6-3, to Artem Khrapko of Corning in the championship match of the Section Four State Qualifiers at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Kelby then lost two straight matches in the state tournament to finish his sophomore season at 17-3.

Stijn van Pel pushed Matt Craig of Norwich (4-0) to an extra game at third singles but fell, 6-0, 7-5.

Eddie Ray Cotton won three events, including a school record of 10.8 seconds in the 100 meters, to lead the host Gilbertsville-Mount Upton/Morris boys to a team victory Wednesday.

Cotton also took first in the 200 (23.3) and the long jump (20-9) for GMUM, which amassed 95 points in the four-team meet.

Downsville, which received school records from Antonio Gomes in the 100 and 200, placed second with 57 points. Steven Casciloa won the discus (119-10) and the shot put (38-0) for the Eagles.

Elijah Coley swept the hurdles for Milford, which placed third with 54 points. Coley won the 110 hurdles in 16.4 and the 400 hurdles in 1:06.8.

Franklin rounded out the team scoring with 11 points.

Christina Hawkins and Victoria Hutzley each won two events to lead the GMUM girls to a team win with 80 points - nine ahead of runner-up Milford.

Hawkins placed first in the discus (92-1) and the shot put (29-7). Hutzley won the long jump (13-6) and set a school record in the triple jump (30-6).

Haley Downin paced third-place Franklin (38 points) with victories in the 100 (13.5) and the 200 (28.6).

Downsville finished last with 23 points.

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton sophomore Julia Knapp won two events and contributed to a relay victory to lead the Bears to Midstate Athletic Conference victories over Walton, Unatego, Deposit and Harpursville on Wednesday.

Knapp sped to victories in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.1 and 1:07, respectively.

She also joined Christina Bochicchio, Katrina Ross and Miltilda Knapp on a 400 relay team that crossed in a winning time of 52.2.

B-G/A had 137 points to beat Walton (79.5), Unatego (60), Deposit (20.5) and Harpursville (two).

Michaela Reynolds won the triple jump (30 feet, 9 1/2 inches) and the high jump (4-8) for Unatego.

B-G/A’s boys also won, compiling 101 points. Unatego (73), Deposit (57), Walton (57) and Harpursville (38) followed.

Throwers Pedro Aparacio and Chris Puerile earned wins in the shot put and discus, respectively, for B-G/A. Aparacio put the shot 43-8 and Puerile threw the discus 111-8.

Jasper Humphries won the 400 (55.3) and the 400 hurdles (1:04.8) for Unatego, which also received a wins from David VanAlstine in the 100 (11.4) and Austin Ryan in the 100 hurdles (17.8).

Mattie Seamans and Cayley Woodbeck each won two events to lead Windham’s girls in losses to Cairo-Durham (78-44) and Chattam (100-10) on Tuesday.

Seamans placed first in the 800 (2:36.7) and the triple jump (30-8) for the Warriors, who received firsts from Woodbeck in the 200 (29.2) and the 400 hurdles (1:22.3).

The two also joined Meabh Lavery and Gaea Turman for a 1,600 relay victory in 4:47.7.

Chris Weiman (3,200, 11:24.0) and Chris Carl (400 hurdles, 1:07.2) paced Windham’s boys, who fell to C-D, 103-23, and to Chattam, 120-9.
