Oneonta holds off Norwich in baseball

STAFF REPORT

Collin Neer hit an RBI single and then scored Oneonta High’s fifth run in the fourth inning and the Yellowjackets hung on for a 5-4 Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball victory Tuesday at Norwich.

Mason Montgomery led off Oneonta’s fourth with a double. He scored on Neer’s RBI single. Neer then stole second and third, and scored on an errant throw on the play at third to make it 5-0.

Norwich scored four unearned runs in the fourth off of winning pitcher Kragh Delello, who struck out seven, walked one and scattered 11 hits.

“Delello pitched a strong game,” OHS coach Joe Hughes said. “It was his first varsity start and he got stronger as the game went on.”

Norwich threatened in the sixth inning, putting a runner on third with one out. With the infield in, Delello induced a grounder to third. Conor Tavarone fielded it and checked the runner before getting the out at first and the third out of the inning also came on a grounder to Tavarone.

Montgomery hit a two-out RBI single during Oneonta’s two-run first inning and Zach King had an two-out RBI single in the third inning for the Yellowjackets, who received two hits apiece from Montgomery, King and Josh Garufi.

OHS (5-2, 3-2) will host Chenango Valley today in a matchup of the state’s last two Class B champions. CV won a state title in 2011 and OHS earned its first state title in baseball last spring.
