Hartwick men hold off Red Dragons

Staff Report

Hartwick College erased a three-goal deficit by scoring five straight in the first quarter en route to a 12-10 non-conference men’s lacrosse victory over host Oneonta State on Tuesday.

Harry Hughes’ four goals and one assist paced the Hawks (3-1), who received three goals and an assist from Cody Ciolino and two goals apiece from Bobby Cassidy and Giuseppe Rice. Jake Cooper also scored for Hartwick, which gave up three goals in the first three minutes.

Connor Coyle scored 36 seconds in for Oneonta State (1-4) and 36 seconds later, Anthony Laureano made it 2-0. Coyle scored again - about a minute-and-a-half later - for a 3-0 advantage.

Ciolino then scored off a pass from Mike Vaglica, sparking a 5-0 Hartwick run to end the quarter. The Red Dragons tied it at 5 in the second period and went into halftime deadlocked at 6.

The Hawks scored the first three goals of the second half, taking a 9-6 lead with 6:17 left in the third quarter. O-State pulled to one goal twice thereafter but failed to tie it again as Hartwick held on for the victory.

Hartwick goalie Carl Lengel made a college-high 16 saves. Chris Miles stopped 19 shots for the Red Dragons, who received four goals from Laureano, three from Coyle and one apiece from Josh Heller, Nick Sorillo and Jim van de Veerdonk.

O-State outshot Hartwick, 50-44, and finished with a 39-24 advantage in groundballs. The Red Dragons are off until March 20, when they’ll visit Ithaca for a non-conference match.

The Hawks host Potsdam for a non-conference game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wright Stadium.
