Sam Sherrill scored six goals – three coming in a key stretch in the third quarter – to lead Oneonta High to a 13-8 Section Four Lacrosse Conference victory over Chenango Valley on Thursday at Oneonta State.
The Yellowjackets (3-2), winners of three straight, opened a 7-1 lead in the second quarter, but the Warriors pulled to 7-6 early in the third quarter.
Sherrill then scored three straight goals. He scored unassisted with 6 minutes, 52 seconds left in the third and again with 5:50 to go in the quarter. He capped the run by scoring off an assist from Jeremy Leary to give the Yellowjackets a 10-6 lead with 4 ½ minutes remaining in the third.
“Sam Sherrill has a knack for pushing it in unsettled situations,” Oneonta coach Jeff Armer said. “He recognizes when to push and when not to push. Plus, he and Jeremy Leary are great groundball guys. They fight for loose balls to get us second opportunities down there.”
CV never got closer than three goals thereafter.
Luke Anderson had four goals, and Leary finished with two goals and three assists for the Jackets.
On the three-game winning streak, Armer said: “Last year, we had a lot of brand new guys to the team, so we kept things simplified. This year, we’re a lot more confident and we have more people on the same page.”
Joe Sherrill stopped 18 shots for OHS.
“He’s really been on fire during the three-game winning streak,” Armer said. “He has a lot to do with it. He’s making a lot of saves goalies shouldn’t be expected to make.”
Oneonta will travel to Owego today before hosting Owego on Monday.
