O-State pitchers shut down Potsdam in doubleheader sweep

Sabrina DeAngelis threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the first game and three pitchers combined to scatter seven hits in the second game as visiting Oneonta State did not allow a run in sweeping a SUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader from Potsdam on Friday.

The Red Dragons (18-9, 8-3) won the first game, 8-0, and took the second, 7-0.

In the first game, DeAngelis (9-5) allowed one baserunner, a two-out single by Molly McCuin in the second inning. In addition to her 10 strikeouts, DeAngelis retired nine batters and groundouts.

Offensively, Traci Lichtenstein led the way for O-State. She put the Red Dragons up, 1-0, in the first inning with an RBI double and then hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to make it 5-0.

Jenn Brocco contributed a two-run double in the sixth inning and an RBI single in the seventh.

Marlene Cuevas went 3-for-3, and Jamie Whittam, Brocco, Lichtenstein and Brianna Rivera had two hits apiece.

In the second game, winning pitcher Rachel Hitt (7-3), Katie O’Flynn and Anna Husain combined to shut out Potsdam. Hitt allowed five hits and struck out four over five innings. Flynn allowed one hit and struck out one over two innings, and Husain allowed one hit and struck out one in the seventh.

O-State pitchers did not allow a walk in the doubleheader.

The Red Dragons scored two runs in each of the first two innings.

Rivera hit an RBI single and Nicole Marzillo had an RBI double as O-State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Lichtenstein hit a two-run double in the second inning.

Whittam, Brocco and Meaghan Foster had two hits apiece for the Red Dragons, who will travel to Plattsburgh for a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

Potsdam is 2-16.

Cobleskill sweeps

SUNY Cobleskill followed a 9-4 victory in the first game with a 5-3 win in the second to sweep a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Morrisville State.
