Freshman Aiyana Roupp went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead Oneonta High to a 9-3 Southern Tier Athletic Conference softball victory over visiting Norwich on Tuesday.
“Aiyana’s been hitting the ball extremely well,” OHS coach Randy Brockway said. “We’ve moved her up to the four spot; she had been hitting seventh. I’m certainly happy the way she’s been swinging the bat.”
The Yellowjackets (5-2, 4-2) scored twice in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Winning pitcher Brieanna Baker walked to lead off. She went to second on a one-out single by Sara Horne. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Baker scored on a single by Roupp and Horne scored on an RBI groundout by Ceili Getman.
Baker struck out 14 and walked two in a five-hitter.
“I thought she looked better today,” Brockway said of Baker, a junior who also went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored twice. “She looked more confident and had more velocity.”
Deseray Thomas also had two hits for the Yellowjackets, who will host Chenango Forks today.
Jordan Sanford went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for Norwich.
Sidney 5, Deposit 1
Mackensie Gravelin hit a two-run homer in the second inning and winning pitcher Connor Decker scattered five hits to lead host Sidney to a Midstate Athletic Conference triumph.
The Warriors (5-2, 4-0) now have wins over perennial MAC powers Afton and Deposit this season.
“We’re getting good pitching, we’re playing solid defense and we’re getting timely hits when we need them,” Sidney coach Mike Brazee said of his team’s start.
Gravelin’s first varsity home run went to left-center.
“It was bomb,” Brazee said. “We don’t have a fence, but that would have been over most fences.”
It gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
