Brieanna Baker struck out 13 and walked none in a four-hitter Thursday, leading Oneonta High to a 2-1 softball victory over Susquehanna Valley in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.
Baker also went 2-for-4 for the Yellowjackets (6-3, 5-3), who scored in the fourth and fifth innings.
Catcher Aiyana Roupp opened the fourth with a one-out double, then was replaced by courtesy runner Amy Shultis. Ceili Getman followed with a bunt single that put runners at the corners, setting up Bekka Struble for an RBI single off the throwing hand of Susquehanna Valley starting pitcher Sophia Pappas.
Sierra Storm took over in the circle for Pappas, who played left field after suffering what OHS coach Randy Brockway described as a jammed finger.
The Jackets then scored an unearned run off of Storm in the fifth. Mia Obergefell singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Horne. Obergefell stole third and later scored when Roupp’s grounder to shortstop was thrown away.
Storm and Pappas hit back-to-back singles off Baker in the sixth inning, the latter cutting SV’s deficit in half.
OHS will face Norwich in the opening round of the Union-Endicott Tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday at Maine-Endwell. The game also will count in the STAC standings. The Jackets will face Greene or Maine-Endwell in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Saturday or the championship game at 3 p.m.
