O-State men's lacrosse falls in SUNYAC semifinal

Host Cortland State built an 11-goal lead through three quarters en route to a 15-3 men’s lacrosse victory over Oneonta State in a SUNY Athletic Conference semifinal Wednesday.

Mike Metzger scored all three goals for O-State, which finished its season at 5-11.

Zach Hopps’ four goals all came as Cortland (14-3) built a 12-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter. He scored back-to-back goals midway through the third period to extend Cortland’s lead to 11-1.

Matt Savlov scored with 3 ½ minutes to go in the quarter to make it 12-1.

Metzger then scored twice in the early moments of the fourth quarter. Connor Coyle assisted the first and Robert Neubert set up the second, but Cortland scored the final three goals.

Coyle finished with two assists for O-State, which was outshot, 47-40, and failed to convert on any of its eight man-up opportunities.

Zach Reilly made five saves and Kevin Fitzpatrick stopped 10 shots for O-State.

Cortland, the eighth-ranked team in Division III, will play Plattsburgh in the final Saturday at a time to be announced. Plattsburgh beat Potsdam, 11-6, in the other semifinal.

MEN’S SOCCERHartwick announces schedule

Hartwick College announced its Division I men’s soccer schedule, one that includes nine opponents that played in the postseason a year ago.

The Hawks, coming off a 5-9-4 season, will begin play in the Sun Belt Conference in 2014 after spending the past seven seasons in the Mid-American Conference.

“A new conference era is upon us and we will be giving it our best shot,” said Hartwick coach John Scott, who’ll begin his fifth season with the Hawks, in a media release by the school. “I don’t think any of us can rightly predict what the outcome may be with this being the inaugural season.”

Hartwick starts its season at Robert Morris on Aug. 29. The teams played to a 1-all tie last season at Elmore Field.
