Oneonta High rallied from a three-goal deficit over the final nine minutes of regulation before falling, 10-9, in overtime to Seton Catholic Central on Wednesday night in a Section Four Lacrosse Conference game at Lloyd Baker Field.

The Saints’ Sam Crowley scored the winner with 2:34 left in overtime.

“It was a broken play,” OHS coach Jeff Armer said of Crowley’s winner. “The ball bounced around and he was pretty much in (close to the goal). It bounced off of Joe’s shoulder.”

OHS goalie Joe Sherrill made 19 saves – three more than counterpart Keyshawn Baker.

Trailing, 9-6, with 9:09 left in regulation, the Yellowjackets received goals from Jake Crotser, Jeremy Leary and Sam Sherrill to tie it.

Crotser scored on a fastbreak, Leary penetrated before scoring and then Sam Sherrill scored the last of game-high six goals with 3:56 left to tie it. Sherrill scored on an underhand shot off an assist from Adam Coe.

Armer said OHS nearly had the winner on a shot by Coe with about a minute left, but it was ruled the ball did not cross the line.

Of Sam Sherrill’s big day, Armer said: “He was taking his guy to the house. He did a good job of pushing unsettled situations.”

Sherrill moved from forward to midfield because OHS lost Luke Anderson to a season-ending injury two games ago. Anderson suffered a tear of his kidney and is done for the season.

Though the Yellowjackets had 56-45 advantage in groundballs, Armer said his squad did a poor job of taking care of the ball over the first three quarters.

“Our offense was ineffective,” Armer said. “We did not value possessions.”

Crotser finished with two goals and one assist for OHS, which honored the late Jared Trotti before the game. Trotti, a 2012 OHS graduate, died last May while visiting friends at the University at Albany.

“A lot of fans showed up and showed a lot of support,” Armer said of the pre-game ceremony. “It came together nicely. A lot of alumni were back and it was fantastic to see. The fans were behind us the entire way.”

The Yellowjackets (4-6) will host Elmira at 6 p.m. Friday on Senior Night. Seniors Anderson, Leary, Coe, Teryn Pietrobono, Paul Bischoff and Facundo Frattini will be honored before the game.
