Three sophomores highlighted area players selected to all-state boys basketball teams, which were released Thursday afternoon by the New York State Sports Writers Association.
Oneonta High’s Albert Odero was selected to the Eighth Team in Class B, Unadilla Valley’s David Dufresne was a Fourth-Team pick in Class C and Franklin’s Derek Beers made the Fourth Team in Class D.
Additionally, Unatego junior Tanner Winchester earned Fifth Team honors in Class C. Honorable mentions went to OHS junior Jordan Gutierrez in Class B, as well as Milford junior Peyton Griffiths and Edmeston senior Logan Vibbard in Class D.
Odero, a 6-foot-3 forward with impressive jumping ability, led a Yellowjackets squad that went 17-3 and lost to Norwich, 40-28, in the Section Four Class B final. He averaged 13.9 points. Teammate Gutierrez averaged an area-best 22.9 points but didn’t play in sectionals after being suspended from the team by coach Jerry Mackey.
Dufresne, an athletic, 6-2 forward, averaged 19.4 points for a Unadilla Valley squad that went 15-5 and won the Midstate Athletic Conference title.
Beers, a guard, finished second in the area in scoring to Gutierrez. He averaging 20.3 points for a Purple Devils squad that finished 7-9.
Winchester finished fourth in the area in scoring at 19.2 points per game, helping Unatego to an 11-8 season.
Griffiths led Milford to the Tri-Valley League title, averaging 17.9 points. Milford finished at 18-2.
Vibbard’s 15.8-point scoring average helped Edmeston to an 18-2 season that ended with an overtime loss to Southern Cayuga in a sectional semifinal.
