Oneonta State hit it big Thursday to make short work of visiting New Paltz.
The top-seeded Red Dragons homered three times in a 12-2 softball victory at home to open the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament and help freshman pitcher Sabrina DeAngelis to her 15th win of the season.
“What a great way to start the tournament,” O-State coach Sara Headley said in a statement prepared by the college. “I am happy the way the team responded to giving up an early run. We struggled earlier in the year against their pitcher, so it was nice to see our team make the necessary adjustments.”
Chelsea Kull’s RBI single in the first inning gave New Paltz (10-23) a 1-0 lead, but the Red Dragons (26-9) tied the score in the bottom frame. Sophomore Jamie Whittam singled up the middle, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenn Brocco and came home on a two-out single to left field by Marlene Cuevas.
Whittam gave Oneonta the lead for keeps in the second with a two-out double that drove in Katie O’Gorman and Nicole Marzillo.
Traci Lichtenstein then sparked a three-run third with a leadoff homer to center field. O’Gorman later hit a two-out double to left-center field that scored Marzillo and Brianna Rivera for a 6-1 lead.
The Red Dragons followed with six runs in the fourth inning to all but end it. Lichtenstein had an RBI double, Cuevas hit a two-run homer to center field and O’Gorman capped Oneonta’s scoring with a three-run homer with two out.
O’Gorman finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs for Oneonta, which got three strikeouts and a walk from DeAngelis in four innings. She allowed one run on three hits.
Katie O’Flynn pitched the fifth inning for O-State, giving up one run on two hits and striking out two.
